(Hereafter, I will refer to these five volumes as Polis Studies.)Author: Matthew Dillon.   The polis (plural, poleis)—also known as a city-state—was the ancient Greek city-state. The word politics comes from this Greek word. In the ancient world, the polis was a nucleus, the central urban area that could also have controlled the surrounding countryside. (The word polis could also refer to the city's body of citizens.).

The division of land and consolidation of territory that created the Greek polis also divided sacred from productive space, sharpened distinctions between purity and pollution, and created a ritual system premised on gender difference. Regional sanctuaries ameliorated competition between city-states, publicized the results of competitive rituals for males, and encouraged judicial alternatives. The polis in Ancient Greek philosophy. Plato analyzes the polis in The Republic, whose Greek title, Πολιτεία (), itself derives from the word best form of government of the polis for Plato is the one that leads to the common good. The philosopher king is the best ruler because, as a philosopher, he is acquainted with the Form of the Good.
